Idée fixe
Posted by High Priestess Kang as IJC, Observations
Main Entry: idée fixe
Pronunciation: (”)E-”dA-’fEks
Function: noun
Inflected Form(s): plural idées fixes
Etymology: French, literally, fixed idea
: an idea that dominates one’s mind especially for a prolonged period
You are important to people you have never met. You are important to people you have never heard of. You are important to people of whose existence you have only a marginal awareness. You are important to people you have forgotten. You are important to people you don’t care about. You are important to people who are not important to you. You are important.
What is it about me that makes me the object of importance rather than the devotee?
Objectification.
To be painted with the reflection of someone else’s dreams, someone else’s ideals.
To be, at the last, not a peer but a superior.
That fixation, ultimately, is the cause of the idolater, not the idol. The golden calf never proclaimed itself a god, never believed itself a god. In the end, the idolaters destroy themselves.
But until that end, they return to their fallen idol religiously.
How can one aspire to greatness, let alone anything, when thought is inhibited by fixating on a particular person, place or thing? Tis one thing to have a goal, tis another to have an obsession.
I was going to add a bit about not putting false G-ds before…Â Then I realized, those who “fix” are more than likely lacking morality anyhow, thus making my point moot.

Oh, interesting point.
On the one hand, I think a fixed idea, even to the point of obsession is a necessary component of great achievement. Realistically, people less mentally and emotionally devoted to a particular pursuit are far more likely to quit when it becomes burdensome, frustrating, or after endless disappointments.
On the other hand, misplaced fixation is, exactly as you said, a barrier to achievement. At best, those people never achieve anything noteworthy because of all the misspent energy. At worst they become the John W. Hinckley, Jr.s and Mark David Chapmans of the world.
As with so many things, I suppose it’s what you do with it that counts.
Excellent points.
I think focusing on goals in critical to success. I think focusing on people is borderline OCD and a little counter-productive.
As I told someone on The Local, why bother selling what someone isn’t interested in buying. At this stage of the game, it has been proven that the buyer is entirely uninterested in the product.
Furthermore, no matter how slick one attempts to be to cover their tracks, they will always be discovered. Especially by those who put appropriate mechanisms in place to protect themselves from the scarier elements of society.
I think behavior like this goes beyond what can be treated. Some people are simply terminally ill in this respect.
It’s not about the buyer. That’s the fundamental difference in outlooks. In this case, it’s all about the seller. It’s all about their needs, accomplishing their goals. Buyer implies someone able to make a conscious decision. These people don’t think of their objects of fixation that way.
They are symbolic of things that the person with a fixation wants. Like Cinderella and her prince. The prince served no independent purpose, he was just the platform used to elevate Cinderella, to make her someone. These people don’t see the people that they are so focused on as people.
Of course it’s impossible to cover their tracks. People like that live in a world of self-delusion where they think they are somehow better, brighter, stronger, faster, and more deserving. Arrogance and entitlement combined with an average, at best, level of competence leads them to make stupid mistakes while believing in their own infallibility. And, at heart, they want to be noticed. They want the object of attention to realize they are alive, to validate their existence.
Can you just imagine how lonely that must really be, living that sort of life? Pining and longing for recognition which will never be forthcoming?
Sadly, one cannot feel sorry for them even if they are predisposed to engage in obsessive behavior. It is one thing to long for something you cannot have. It is another thing to wreak havoc and throw one’s toys from the pram because their feelings are not mutual.
The biggest challenge for those affilicted is accepting the fact that they are damaged goods and denied access for a valid reason. They are entirely unable to channel the energy from obsessing into self improvement.
As the world of electronica expands, women will be in further danger. Someday, there will be some sort of regulation, hopefully, which will protect the innocent in a global fashion. It sucks that we have to wait until the slime reaches our soil before legal action can be taken.
However, at least there are pending files, in the interim.
I hope more women become proactive. And…I hope the female population of stalker city realizes what a grave disservice they are doing to their gender and cease. Then again, it’s hard to think clearly when clouded by the booze.
